Perry has the father of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first TV roles included two roles as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on The ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mom. Perry was forbidden to begin acting by her parents until she reached adulthood, as they feared the strain it might result in. Perry states that she did not want to be an actor in highschool but decided to start playing as a way to make friends at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. After graduating Perry relocated in New York to search for TV work, landing a few roles on series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought Perry back home to California where she found theater jobs. The Other Place was performed by her and her mom on Broadway in 2013 Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie, along with Kevin McKidd. This was performed at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was in nine episodes of the ABC drama The Family in 2016. In 2017, she had a minor role on the ABC political drama Scandal in which her father was the main character. She played the role of a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. The role was offered to her in an audition that was open despite being connected to this character.
